Does PNG keep transparency?
Yes. The alpha channel is drawn onto a canvas and exported as PNG.
Why is the PNG larger?
PNG is lossless. That is expected, especially for photos. Use JPEG if you need a small photo file.

The first frame becomes a still PNG. Animation needs GIF or video.
